How to Incorporate Pops of Color into Your Outfits

Spring is here and that means it’s time for colorful pastels! This spring and summer is going to be all about bringing color into your wardrobe… and there are a lot of bright pigmented pieces! However if you are like me always finding yourself attracted to more subdued classic colors *cough* black *ahem… don’t worry! There are ways to bring some color to your outfits, so here are some tips I find that work for me and my style ;)

Bags. This is an easy one! A great way to get that pop of color into you outfit is by throwing a colorful bag over your shoulder, of course! You can always find bags in all kinds of colors pretty much everywhere this time of the year so invest in a cute tote or even a wristlet in a bright fun color!

Jewelry. Another great easy way to play up your outfit is by putting on a pair of colorful statement earrings or statement necklace. I really like forever 21’s wide assortment of colors in their jewelry and it’s CHEAP! Don’t forget about bracelets and rings too!

Nail Polish. Your nails count in fashion too you know! Put a bright or pastel color on your nails or an even a pattern. I saw a girl with cupcakes on her nails, it was fun, unique, and added a cute pop of color to her neutral outfit!

Belts. Since the tucked in shirt look is big this season, loop a thin red belt through those white shorts! A belt would also look great paired with the right kind of dress as well.

Scarves. A light sheer pastel colored scarf is a great addition to your spring oufits.

Shoes. This is my favorite look! I love the look of a cute kinda classic colored outfit with a sexy colorful heel! They don’t have to be heels they can be a flat, boots, sandals, or whatever you’re comfortable with, just keep in mind you want the color compliment your outfit and not throw it off.

Wardrobe Must Haves According to Me!

These are my fashion must haves and why!

Tanks! Lot and Lots of tanks! And tube tops! It is important to have a wide assortment of tanks in your closet because it’s a basic and can also help in making different outfits with other tops! I make sure to stock up on basic color tanks that can go well with what I already have in my closet. I stick mostly to blacks, whites, navy blues, beige, and will occasionally get something bright for a pop of color to add to an outfit if I’m feeling spontaneous! Most of my tanks are lace but make sure to have at least one of each style, 1 lace, 1 basic spaghetti strap, 1 tube top, and 1 beater tank.

Go to basic jeans! I’m a firm believer that every single man and woman should have at least one pair of dark denim that not only looks great but is basic enough that it can go with anything. I mean no rips, no embellishments, just a nice pair of dark washed jeans that are flattering to your body shape. Mine are my dark washed bootcut and even darker wash skinnies, both of them get tons of compliments! Why is this important? 1) Because when you’re rushing to get out of the door for work, school, dinks, these are the jeans that you can always rely on. And 2) Because they are basic and you can get away with wearing them a few times a week without anyone noticing. So invest a little in a pair or two of dark washed jeans that are good for your body type, like I’ve explained in one of my previous posts!

Black Leggings! One word… bloated. When it’s that time of the month and I feel like a balloon these with a tunic are my life savers! Enough said.

The Black Dress! Notice how I didn’t say the “little” black dress. Make sure this is a dress meant for your body that compliments your body and shows off ONE of your most flattering aspects not all twenty-three. When buying one think to yourself is this something you could wear on a date, a night out with girls, and throw a sweater over for a family dinner? Every girl should have this and if you don’t, run to the store NOW because you never ever know when you’ll need a black dress.

Black Pumps. Every girl should not only have a dress that instantly makes her feel sexy but the go to pumps to go along with it! Make sure they are versatile and can go with your jeans, a skirt, and a dress. And make sure they are BASIC as well no crazies. We want them to go with any outfit.

A Classic Pea Coat or Trench Coat. Like everything else I’ve been saying make sure it’s a basic color that won’t go out of style so that it is something that can go with most outfits as well as a good formal looking one. Mine is my black pea coat from Macy’s I recently got for Christmas from my boyfriend!

Boots. This is a two parter, I have a pair of flat sorta ugg knock off boots that are a slate grey color that go well with my casual outfits, and black leather heel ones that go well with any outfit that I want to make more sexy!

Scarves! I have a million scarves! Winter scarves, spring scarves, black scarves, leopard print scarves! You get the jist. I think you should have at least these 3 types of scarves, 1) a heavy one for when it’s cold out 2) a light spring one for when it’s getting a little warmer and/or for accessorizing an outfit and 3) a printed one for spicing up an outfit!

So those are my most basic wardrobe musts that I can’t live without! Hopefully this can give you some ideas on building your closet!

My Tips and Tricks for Shiny Hair!

                      Pamper Yourself Sunday!

I think that Sundays for girls should be spent relaxing, beautify, and getting yourself mentally and physically prepared for the week ahead of work or school. What better way to do so then to pamper yourself! Take a long bubble bath, do some relaxing yoga, give yourself a manicure and pedicure, do an at home facial mask, whatever you want that will make you feel pretty, refreshed, and ready for the week ahead! And if you can’t think of anything I’ll be here to give you some ideas! On with Pamper Sunday!

Now, my hair is naturally dark blonde but I bleach it every 4-5 weeks, I can’t usually go any longer than 4 weeks because my hair grows SUPER fast! I also have very very very thick wavy hair and when I get out of the shower it likes to hold onto the water for dear life (I mean air drying is out of the question) so to damage it even further I blow dry my hair. I also use my flat iron and sometimes curling iron too. Okay it’s not as bad as I’m making it out to be! I’ll do a post another time on my daily hair regime but for now here are some Sunday pampering tips on how to get shiny healthy looking hair overnight!

1)      ALWAYS use a conditioning cream or spray on damp hair when you get out of the shower. A leave-in conditioner is great for detangling wet hair and helps a TON with frizziness. If you have fine hair or hair that gets greasy quickly I recommend using a spray. I use a few things because my hair is so thick and bleached, I first spray it with a conditioning spray, I like Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-In Treatment and John Frieda Daily Nourishment Leave-in Fortifying Spray.
2)      Find a good shine serum or oil! I love love loooooove Moroccan Oil! I also use to use the Matrix Biolage Smoothing Serum, as a sorta kinda cheaper alternative which works well in my opinion too. A serum is what’s going to make you hair look silky and shiny! (#4 for SUPER CHEAP alternative)
3)      Always rinse out your conditioner with cool water. Ever notice how the water gets colder when the hairdresser is washing your hair? This is because it helps in the circulation through your hair and helps make your hair shiny.
4)   Lemon and water. Mix lemon juice with water in a spray bottle and spray it onto wet or dry hair for some extra shine, can also use as substitute for drugstore shine sprays!
5)      Olive oil! Here’s a money saving trick I adore! Not only is your olive oil good for cooking but it’s an amazing cheap way to give your hair some amazing shine! If you don’t want to spend money on expensive oils and serums and don’t mind the smell, which I personally like it makes me want some pasta haha, then this is a great option! All I do is take about a quarter size amount and rub it through my ends until they’re all wet then I take some more and move it upwards towards my scalp. WARNING- don’t put too much on your roots because it can really weigh down your hair just a LITTLE BIT, I mean like a quick sweep across! Basically you just want to get the lower half of your hair damp NOT SOAKING WET just damp because this is wear your hair looses most of it’s moisture. Then I put my hair up in a bun and put a towel around my pillow so my sheets don’t get all greasy, then SLEEP! If you’re not going anywhere you can also do this in the a.m. then throw your hair up and relax or do some homework then wash it out before bed. Then shampoo your real good until the oil is washed out, then condition and do my regular hair care routine minus the oils or serums, and TA DA! Shiny hair :)
6)      Avacado mask! This is another fun at home remedy to do this take an avocado anscoop out the fruit into a bowl and mash it all up like your making potatoes. Once that is done add in about 1 Tbsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil then add 1 Tbsp of honey then mix it into a thick paste. Work a little bit of the paste into your roots and top section of hair, then work the rest of the mixture into you bottom half and ends of your hair (this is wear you want the majority of the substance to go) Put you hair into a bun and leave it in for about 15-20 minuets, then jump in the shower and go about your regular hair care routine! Your hair should look and feel softer and shiner.
7)      Rotate shampoos and conditioners. Your actually gets use to the shampoo and conditioner products you put in it and stops benefiting from it leaving your hair dull and dry. To avoid this you should be using a different brand every 3 months. If there’s one particular product you like and don’t want to give up you can always go back to it after you try another product for a few months. I for one love the smell of Herbal Essence’s Long Term Relationship! So what I’ll do is use it for about 2-3 months then try out another line for 3 months and then go back to the Herbal for a few washes to see if it’s benefiting my hair, if it is I will use it for a couple months, if it’s not then I will use another product for a couple months then try again! Like I said your hair gets use to products so it needs to be introduced to a few others before being reintroduced to previously used ones.

As for the at home olive oil and avocado mask treatments you can repeat these once or twice a week on send or third day unwashed hair for bet results. Also to keep your hair healthy and shiny you should not be washing your hair everyday as this will just dry out your hair. My hair doesn’t get greasy fast so I wash it every 3 days, if your hair does grease up fast try washing it every other day. Ideally you should be washing you hair every 2-4 days depending on how greasy your hair is.

If you try any or all of these tips you should be seeing a difference. These are the products that work for me but everyone is different find products that are meant for your hair type and try one of my at home remedies and your hair should be glowing!! Now go grab a glass of wine or tea and have an amazing Pamper Yourself Sunday!

Spring/Summer 2011 Colors

A lot of this spring/summer’s color inspirations are taken from flowers of gardens and tropical forests along with deep sea waters to the shoreline of beaches. Warm metallics in gold and bronze are also going to be key colors this season. These are colors are meant to be "uplifting", "soft", and "energizing"!

These are fun and bright! Should be incorporated into your wardrobe with your florals or as pops of color. Colors from left to right- Spring Green, Iris, Viola, Daffodil, Poppy, Geranium, Blueberry.

I personally would recommend using these colors in embellishments in clothing or purses. These are great colors for those of you who take on the punk look or want to add some rough edge to your pieces! Colors- Full Turquoise, Slate, Bright White, Yellow Green, Black Ink, Maroon.

This is my favorite! These nautical tones are best used for sheer flowing clothing that floats and drapes! Colors- Air, Mist, Aqua, Azure, Silver, Dark Cyan.

New Classic
These colors are meant to be your classic pieces, think your classic white tee that you wear on your lazy days is now bright pink! These a very bright and meant to spruce up the color in your wardrobe.  Colors- Orchid, Gold, Brick, Lawn, Orange Sorbet, Sea Green.

FASHION TIP!!! If you don't feel comfortable wearing a top this bright or you are apple shape ( b/c apple shapes should keep the darks on the top and brights on the bottom...check out my post on body shapes!) but still want to incorporate the brights into your spring closet do pops of color instead! Example: a cute purse, earings, necklace, bracelet, or pieces of clothing with tiny accents of these colors in the embellishments are nice touches of colors!

These radiant glowing colors are perfect for your summer tan! Colors- Ghost, Golden, Blush, Mint Cream, Ivory, Jet.

Spring/Summer 2011 Trends!

I found that this spring and summer is about taking classic looks and making them a little sexier, edgier, and riskier ;)

Late 50’s early 60’s
Think Mad Men and how to be prim and proper.
o       maxi skirts
o       bellow the knee full skirts
o       cinched in waists
o       floral prints
o       pencil skirts
o       **sexy tip: get a skirt that’s high waisted, form fitting, and hits directly below the knee with a slit in the back. Perfect for hourglass shapes!

Not the bohochic of last summer. More sophisticated with a disco edge!
o       satin and silk fabrics
o       flowy blouses
o       leather satchel bag or small bags with long straps
o       big round and cat eye sunglasses
o       high waisted wide legged pants
o       flared pants

I'll be doing another post on how to pull off the 70's sophisticated glam look soon!!!

Biker Chic
Retire your military coats and say hello to the motorcycle jackets!
o       zippers
o       leather
o       motorcycle boots
o       motorcycle style jackets… vroooommm ;)

Tapered Hemlines/Tail Hems
Short in the front longer in the back! I love this!

Dare to bear
-May not quite catch on mainstream but fashion icons such as Olivia Palermo and Anna Dello Russo             have been spotted skipping the slips and letting their undergarments show. Tastefully!
-Use lace as you wear in the fall but go for more spring colors like whites, lilacs, and yellows.

I'm OBSESSED with lace anything and so so happy this is sticking around for spring and summer!! :) Not shying away with the bra showing trend, however probably will never show the undies....

Crop Tops
If you're uncomfortable bearing your tummy, opt for a top or dress with cutouts along your midsection!

Sheer Maxi Dresses
Like last summers trend with a little more risk!

Kitten Heels and Clogs
If you’ve missed them then it’s time to rock them again!

Not my personal fav but I have to admit those clogs are kind of cute... maybe because they have lace! haha

Jumpsuits and Rompers
Another thing you might already have from last year!

Crochet and macramé
Goes along with that sophisticated 70’s trend and lace trend.

And Stripes
When all else fails pull out the classic nautical stripes!
